The last sun kd edwards5/26/2023 Almost as if Quinn, the Seer, was dishing out the worldbuilding, some questions remained frustratingly out of reach and unanswered until later in the novel. There are lovely notes of worldbuilding throughout the novel, although sometimes they didn’t quite come in the order I’d hope for or in the time I really was looking for those answers. This is the world of K D Edwards debut novel, The Last Sun If it doesn’t wreck his homeland or get him killed first, that is. That hook, too and just might provide an opportunity for Rune to prove and show his capability and true abilities. It is doing one of those odd jobs, against another noble House, that Sun gets hooked into an intrigue that extends across New Atlantis. A sword fighter and a sorcerer, he lives doing odd jobs here and there, a down on his luck existence especially given the wealth and power of his peers, and of his life, long ago. House Sun, his tarot card named noble family, has long since fallen and he is the only survivor. In a world very much like ours but where Atlantis existed, and existed into the modern era until the survivors of its fall emigrated to a new home in the New World, a scion of a fallen House is wrapped up in mystery and intrigue, as rivalries, schemes and long set plans collide with that scion’s destiny and coming into his true power.

Spaeth then analyzes an image of the goddess in a relief of the Ara Pacis, an important state monument of the Augustan period, showing how it incorporates all these varied roles and associations of Ceres. In particular, she examines two major concepts, fertility and liminality, and two social categories, the plebs and women, which were inextricably linked with Ceres in the Roman mind. In this thematic study of the Roman goddess Ceres, Barbette Spaeth explores the rich complexity of meanings and functions that grew up around the goddess from the prehistoric period to the Late Roman Empire. New cults are developing around ancient goddesses from many cultures, although their modern adherents often envision and interpret the goddesses very differently than their original worshippers did. Interest in goddess worship is growing in contemporary society, as women seek models for feminine spirituality and wholeness.

Less is lost greer5/26/2023 Anxiety, as much as anything else, propels his picaresque progress through this road-trip novel. Less accepted that he could survive anything … to hell with doubt and worry.”īut “doubt and worry” can’t be jettisoned for long indeed, they are the pillars of Less’s characterisation. And yet, in those few minutes, as man and moose, they watched the setting sun, and Arthur Less felt chosen … when it left him. “For local detail and colour headed to a hot springs recommended by his lodge … He came upon the springs, peeled off his clothes and settled naked into the pool … very quietly but startlingly … an enormous moose came out of the forest, walked over and sat beside him in the pool … Less urinated freely in pure terror. He recounts one of Arthur’s bizarre interludes early on, in the course of researching a travel piece. Our narrator, Freddy Palu, is Less’s boyfriend. Absurdity and playfulness are the crowd-pleasing hallmarks – and the same is largely true of the follow-up, Less Is Lost. Less bounces from Mexico to Morocco to India, jet-setting in a bid to distract himself from romantic turmoil back home. A ndrew Sean Greer’s Pulitzer-winning 2017 novel Less is a frenetic and often hilarious account of “minor American novelist” Arthur Less navigating zany twists of fate during a series of literary engagements across the globe.

Extra yarn barnett5/26/2023 When she's finished with that, she still has extra yarn. When she's finished, she knits one for her dog. One day, she comes upon a box of colorful yarn, and knits herself a sweater. Everything.Īnnabelle lives in a cold, colorless town where everything is covered with snow and soot. The nephew liked the silly pirate at the end. She didn’t think the yarn was all that pretty and she figured out the end. The artwork did a great job of contrasting the drab life verses the colorful life with yarn and the artwork puts a lot of work into making the drawing look like yarn. It’s original, but it is also similar to the fable of the couple that find the never ending penny, but that ruins their lives where this doesn’t ruin Annabelle’s life. It’s an original story and I like that so I upped it to 4 stars. Word gets out and people come wanting to see these wonders, even pirates who want to get the magic box. She makes herself a sweater and it isn’t long before she makes a sweater for everyone. She lives in a drab little town where everyone is drab looking. Annabelle finds a magic yarn box that never runs out of yarn.

A just so story5/25/2023 These pictures can be found in a PDF file to accompany each chapter. This recording of the Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling includes Kipling's descriptions of the pictures he drew for the book. Each listener will need to examine critically both Kipling's attitudes and their own. Because the writing plays with sound and meaning the Just So Stories are best enjoyed when read aloud.Īs we all are, Kipling was a child of his time and social setting, so for example in "How the Leopard Got his Spots" he uses what one recent reviewer called "the N word" to refer to the Ethiopian. For both reasons these stories been loved by generations of children and adults alike. This playfulness is also dramatically present in the plotting. The Nobel prize-winning author's enjoyment in playing with the sounds and meanings of words is very evident throughout, and adds to adults' enjoyment of these stories for children. This recording aims to be the first complete audio book of this title with nothing left out. The Just So Stories for Little Children are among Kipling's best known and loved works. Ghost Flames by Charles J. Hanley5/25/2023 In time for the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the war, Hanley offers a peoples history of the devastating events on the Korean Peninsula- Book Synopsis A powerful, character-driven narrative of the Korean War from the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who helped uncover some of its longest-held and darkest secrets. The narrative unfolds in interwoven episodes, month by month, from the hilltop trench lines, the refugee camps and the prisoner-of-war camps. In Ghost Flames, Charles Hanley adds new color and urgency by telling the history of the war through the eyes of twenty one individuals - soldiers and civilians, male and female, young and old, witnesses both to atrocity and to heroism. Today, mass graves still litter the countryside and two nuclear-armed forces stand at odds. American forces dropped 635,000 tons of bombs over Korea - more than the entire Pacific campaign of World War II - and millions of Koreans perished. About the Book Although it was then perceived as a far-off and inconclusive engagement, the Korean War was a decisive and deeply destructive conflict. |
